Ars Antiqua Austria

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ars Antiqua Austria is an early music group founded in Linz in 1995 with the specific aim of performing Austrian baroque music on period instruments. The music at the imperial court in Vienna during the baroque era was influenced by Italian and French musical forms as well as by Spanish court music. Elements of Slavic and Hungarian folk music also mingled with alpine sounds in Austrian baroque music. The fusion of court with folk music and an infusion of dance music formed the typical Austrian baroque sound.

The core of Ars Antiqua Austria comprises 8 musicians directed by the baroque violinist Gunar Letzbor. The ensemble is augmented, as needed, to perform a wider repertoire.
