Arroyo Seco Creek

Arroyo Seco Creek is a tributary stream to Schell Creek in southern Sonoma County, California. Arroyo Seco Creek drains a portion of the western slopes of the southern Mayacmas Mountains. This 11.4 square mile watershed,[1] along with the entire Mayacmas mountain block, was formed in the Miocene era by volcanic action along with tectonic uplift about 12 million years ago. Schell Creek discharges to Sonoma Creek, which in turn empties into the Napa Sonoma Marsh. Soils of the immediate streambed and its vicinity are classified as the Riverwash series, recent deposition of sands and gravels.[2]
Some of California's early historical events transpired in this watershed associated with the early california history of the town of Sonoma; furthermore, the first vineyard in the United States west of the Mississippi River was planted in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy in the lower Arroyo Seco Creek watershed.
