Arpitan people

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arpitan people is the name given by promoters of the concept of Arpitania as a national identity to populations living in parts of Italy, France and Switzerland (ex-possession of the duchy of Savoy, Franche-Comté, Maconnais, Forez), whose original languages belong to the francoprovencal (arpitan) family. Recognition of Arpitans as an ethnic group is spearheaded by organisations such as Aliance culturè la arpitana in Lausanne, which issues a non-official "Arpitan passport" in order to underline the transnational identity of the region. In 2005, recognition of Arpitania, as a Euroregion was raised as an issue. The concept of Arpitania originated in the 70s with the valdotan political movement Harpitanya. In some parts or Arpitania, arpitian coexist with occitan.
