[edit] Origin
In January 1972 Volkswagen Group commissioned Porsche to design a successor for their joint venture the 914 sports car. The new model, codenamed EA-425, was to be marketed as the flagship Audi.
The 1973 oil crisis led to higher petrol prices and reduced demand for sports cars while the strengthening West German currency pushed up their price in export markets. Volkswagen launched their own entry-level sports car, the Scirocco based on the Golf, in March 1974 and started to lose interest in the upmarket EA-425. Early in 1975, as tools were being bought for production, EA-425 was cancelled by the newly appointed head of Volkswagen. In model year 1975 Porsche production reached an all time low of around 9000 , 911s and a few 914s. They still needed a cheaper entry-level car that could be built and sold in high volumes.
In February 1975 Volkswagen sold the EA-425 project back to Porsche for between 100 and 160M Deutsche Marks. To ease Porsche's cash flow payment was phased over production of the first 100000 units. The cars were assembled at the Audi factory in Neckersulm ensuring the long term survival of the former NSU Motorenwerke AG.
The Porsche 924 was launched in November 1975.
- sucessor to Porsche/VW 914
- EA-425 project started jan 72
- oil crisis, success of scirocco, VW financial crisis (quote), collapse of NSU leave Neckarsulm close to closure,
VW lose interest in EA-425 and following change of chairman in XX 1975 allow Porsche to buy the project back
- oil crisis
- VW's loss of interest: VW's financial crisis, success of Scirocco
- Porsche: MY 1975? 911 only model and made all time low number of them, needed a lower cost car to raise volumes
- new VW leadership said yes in 1975
- terms of deal capital repaid over 1st 100,000 cars + 100M DM to finish development and launch
- secured future of assembly plant NSU Neckarsulm and helped secure engine plant at Salzgitter
- launched ...
[edit] Design and Technology
The 924 was the first road car to break with Porsche's tradition of aircooled engines mounted Porsche had just started to develop a new flagship model, the 928. EA-425 shared the 928's basic design: FMR layout with a transaxle and watercooled engine.
- two Porsche firsts: watercooled engine, FMR layout
- praise for layout and handling from Quick Vic
- break with MR/RR aircooled past
- 1970-1971 engineering study suggest break with Porsche tradition
- FMR layout with clutch at front and transaxle at back
- watercooled instead of air to meet increasingly tough noise emission regulations
- Porsche started dev of flagship 928, at that time seen as replacement for 911 around 1980, three months before EA-924
- EA-??? and 928 experiments
- 1984cc to beat punative tax on cars over 2L in Italy and Japan

[edit] 1976-1985? Porsche 924
- style large rear deck (contrast 911), big glass hatch at rear, pop up headlights, characterise the shape, drag coefficent
- used VW parts to keep cost down: Audi gear boxes, VW Golf door handles, instruments
- VW van engine myth: bottom end VW, Porsche added cylinder head, manifolds, fuel inject, big oil pump
- largely unchanged over life xpt gearboxes, minor mechanical refinements from Turbo (Ed: list?), minor trim upgrades
- performance data from Autodata: top speed, 0-60, fuel economy, peak power@rev, peak torque@rev
- number produced
[edit] Porsche 924 Turbo (931)
- more performance, fewer VW parts
- distinctive features vs 924: NACA air duct to force air over turbo mounted on exhaust side of engine, slots in valance to improve air flow to radiator and oil cooler, spoke effect wheels, larger rear poly spoiler
- Getrag 5 manual 5 speed dog-leg gearbox used on 911 (Ed: ?) series
[edit] 1979-1981 Porsche 924 Turbo
- performance data
- turbocharger reliability problems
[edit] 1982-1983 Porsche 924 Turbo
- known as series 2
- series 2 smaller turbo and better oil recurc improved turbo life, improved engine mgmt meant
- performance data: essentially unchanged from earlier apart from improve fuel economy

[edit] History
In January 1972 Volkswagen Group comissioned Porsche to design a successor for their joint venture the 914 sports car. The new model, codenamed EA-425, was to be marketed as an Audi.
The 924, and 928 developed in parallel, broke with Porsche's design tradition. The new models had water-cooled engines that ran quieter than Porsche's air-cooled boxers to meet increasingly tough emissions requirements. They were FR layout with a transaxle to spread the weight evenly over front and rear axles, giving neutral handling compared to the 40:60 rear bias of the RR Porsche 911 .
To keep costs down the 924 used as many existing Volkswagen components as possible including the engine the 2.0 L 4 cylinder unit...
By 1975 the Audi plant at Neckarsulm was tooling up to produce the EA-425. However, given the decline in the sports car market following the 1973 oil crisis and the success of the Scirocco, launched in 1974, Volkswagen cancelled the EA-425.
[edit] 924
Between 1976 and 1985 around 121,000 examples of the base model were produced.
The engine combined the cylinder block from the Audi inline-4, found in the Audi 100 C1 saloon and the original Volkswagen LT van, with Porsche designed 8-valve SOHC head, inlet and exhaust manifolds. Porsche also replaced the standard engine's carburetor with Bosch CIS K-Jetronic fuel injection. With 1984 cc capacity the engine's maximum power and torque were 92 kW / 125 hp (DIN) at 5800 rpm and 165 Nm / 125.5 lb/ft at 3500 rpm respectively. Cars exported to the USA were detuned to meet emissions regulations.
The standard Audi 4-speed manual gearbox was upgraded to 5-speed in 1980, a 3-speed automatic was available from 1977.
Apart from minor improvements to the suspension, brakes and trim the 924 was largely unchanged over its 9 years in production.
