This is an Archive 1 of my talk page, containing material from 12 April 2006 to 9 June 2006. It may contain some refactoring (mostly, copying pieces of conversations spread out over multiple places, including here, to my talk page, and adjusting indentation accordingly) or contextual notes (e.g. links to related conversation) from after that date. Refactoring is usually noted in bold, but occasionally, where insignificant, in invisible comments. Contextual notes should be in italics.

[edit] Welcome

Note: This section was originally not a section, but simply on the top of the page. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 01:32, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. It's nice to see a fellow BSDer joining the Wikipedia ranks. You're probably proficient enough to figure things out on your own, but if you need help with something, feel free to ask me. Although I don't edit the BSD-related articles much, I do watch over them, so we're likely to run into each other frequently.

Here's a few introductory links, though I'm sure you're already familiar with them:

Thanks for contributing! Mindmatrix 14:36, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Honestly, I'm not very good at style, but I try, and you and others are free to edit my work for style. Armedblowfish 12 April 2006

[edit] DNA Resequencer Refs

Hi, the following comment is my reply to your comments on the talk page. It's also posted there.

Trascrpits and summaries are not what's being cited. The episodes themselves are being cited. I am just linking to the wiki summaries of the episodes in case people want to read/see them. It's the episodes that are being cited, the acutal footage. However, I have provided sevral external episode summaries and encyclopedia entries as futher refrences. Most facts are cited by both the episodes and summaries/other articles. Look more closely as the refs. Tobyk777 01:26, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stargate (device) refs

I also responsded to you. Tobyk777 01:54, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stargate

I also responded to your here.

[edit] The one theme

The main point is that we are NOT citing ourselves. We Are citing the episodes themselves. The video footage, the DVDs, what appears on TV. We are simply linking to a summary of the episodes since we can't acutaly link to the episodes. (for various obvious reasons). We are not citing our own summaries. In fact, most of our summaries do not include the data used from the episode in the articles. We just link, so people can see an episode summary. (If they don't have the time or the means to watch an entire episode) Tobyk777 01:54, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

For an idea as to how this was resolved, see #Stargate Award below. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 03:14, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Stargate Award

Despite my critisim of you at the begining, I am amazed at the quality and quantity of contributions you have made on Stargate. You have done more than almost anyone in the project. I hereby award you the Stargate award.

PS I think you should put your name on the participants list at the stargate project. Tobyk777 01:31, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Meep. Thanks, though I really haven't added that much content, just references. :) Armedblowfish 01:44, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
Well I don't know whether you watch Stargate or not. If you don't, it would be very hard to add content. If you do, then I appericate you chosing to add refs, as the majority of your edits. Refrences are extremely important and extremly tidous. You have imporved our refing greatly. I saw you added scripts to DNA Resequencer. Thanks. Tobyk777 02:06, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I've watched a bit. Not much though, and only recently. It's a good show, but I don't consider myself a fan. ... :) Armedblowfish 02:13, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
You should watch more, it's the greatest TV show of all time. Ive never missed an episode, and am loaning the show on DVD to more than 40 people. Tobyk777 03:28, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I probably will. The reason I was reluctant to start watching in the first place is because SciFi has a very bad habit of cancelling shows I like abruptly (Crusade (a spinoff from Babylon 5) (cancelled halfway through the first season), Invisible Man (only had an episode or two to tie off plot lines), Farscape (cancelled after part I of a "to be continued" episode that showed the two main characters being blown to bits at the end, even though SciFi had signed a two-year contract... they eventually tied it off with a mini-series... they also cancelled Lex but I did not watch that). Then Stargate introduced Ben Browder and Claudia Black (two actors I like - they were on Farscape), which was a sort of irresistable bait. Anyways, I think its a good series. [edit] Malfunction on Comparison of open source operating systems

65.94.59.238 (Talk) was trying to make a legitimate edit to the tables on Comparison of open source operating systems (history). Tawkerbot2 kept reverting this change by 65.94.59.238, until finally Balihb (the original creator and main contributor to the article) made the edit him/herself, which Tawkerbot2 did not revert. Anyways, please don't take the previous criticisms on this talk page by 65.94.59.238 too seriously, I'm sure he/she was just upset and unfamiliar with Wikipedian social policies. I also believe the block against 65.94.59.238 should be lifted, if it hasn't already, with a note to assume good faith. Armedblowfish 00:01, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Note: the preceding section was copied from User talk:Tawkerbot2 (see archive) for context, and the below section was made a subsection. Armedblowfish 00:47, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ok

From what I could tell it was the penis vandal that was making those posts hence the range block and the sprotects not exactly the user in question, if I'm wrong please let me know -- Tawker 00:20, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Though it's hard to tell, given that the person seems to have a very dynamic IP address, all of the edits made by 65.94.59.238 up to the point where he/she became upset at you/your bot seem to have been good faith, legitimate edits. Don't get me wrong - I don't support the way he/she handled his/her frustration (not assuming good faith), but it doesn't look like the Wikipedia:Long term abuse/The Autofellatio Redirect Vandal to me, and it is my personal belief that he/she should be unblocked. I'm not sure if you want this conversation on my talk page or yours, so I'll try both I guess. Armedblowfish 00:33, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
The following is the continuation of this discussion copied from Tawkerbot2's talk page (see archive). Note that there were also several revert wars involving comments in violation of WP:NPA, which can be found in the edit history of Tawkerbot2's talk page. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 01:54, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
Note to 65.94.59.238/65.94.101.206/the other IPs you've been using: Please try to calm down, and assume good faith. Personal attacks will not resolve the situation. While Tawkerbot2 made a mistake in reverting your edits on Comparison of open source operating systems, Tawkerbot2 is generally very useful, and about 98% accurate, and all AIs have limitations. Perhaps you could try explaining the situation, instead of getting angry? Armedblowfish 01:23, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Or Tawker could supervise the bot instead of leaving it free to make such mistakes. 65.94.101.206 01:37, 29 May 2006 (UTC) -- the preceding edit was modified by Armedblowfish to make it a bit more polite
Such mistakes are not irreversible. For instance, you could leave a message on Tawkerbot2's talk page explaining the mistake. Then, Tawker could either remove the vandalism warnings from your talk page, or issue a formal apology on your talk page explaining that it was a mistake. (And maybe block Tawkerbot2 from editing Comparison of open source operating systems until whatever cause the malfunction is fixed, if Tawkerbot2's code allows that.) However, personal attacks are reason to block in and of themselves. Please try to calm down. Armedblowfish 01:53, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Can you do the same in Macedonia (terminology)? There's a catch: A templatised box (Template:Geographical Macedonia) that appears in the article, has to link to the ref1 (name="region"). I tried changing the template, but it doesn't work. Know any better?  NikoSilver  (T) @ (C) 23:31, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I tried, but FrancisTyers didn't seem to like the changes. See Talk:Macedonia (terminology)#New reference style and Talk:Macedonian language#New reference style. Armedblowfish 00:14, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. The automatic tool (and the refs themselves) need some tuning. Look at the comment below yours... (cool thingy that fn/fnb)  NikoSilver  (T) @ (C) 00:58, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Apologies

If I came off a little bit sharp. I didn't mean to seem rude. I know we're both trying to help the encyclopaedia, but if you could better check when you perform ref conversion I'd be much obliged. It would be good if people could stop converting refs until the bugs are fixed, but unfortunately I seem to be in the minority in thinking that it is buggy :( I know there is a developer working on it, so it shouldn't be too long though! :) - FrancisTyers 01:21, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

No offense taken. I'm new at using that tool, and wasn't aware of the bugs that NikoSilver pointed out. But, now that I know, I can look out for them, and fix them manually. Armedblowfish 01:25, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Use CSS style="clear:both;". If you aren't sure how to do this, add your tag, and leave a note on my talk page and I'll get around to it. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 00:05, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Well I know CSS means cascading style sheet but that's about it. Whispering 18:22, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
"Thank you much. Oh and I love your username. Whispering 20:42, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Strange, the old way worked fine on Mozilla Firefox. Anyways, since the new version of the the template (with CSS style="clear:both;") may mess up some Wikipedian's user pages by moving the template, I created a new one, so that Wikipedians may pick. Anyways, I suggest you check Wikipedia:Browser notes to see if your browser is listed as having this problem, and if not, report it. : ) Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 20:53, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Thanks
Armedblowfish, thank you for participating in my RfA. It passed with an amazingly unopposed 77/0/1. Thanks for the support everybody! If you see me doing anything wrong, want to ask me something, or just want to yell in my general direction, leave me a note on my talk page. I promise to try and knock out Wikipedia's problems wherever I may find them!

[edit] Removal of inuse tags from pages related to WP:LSY

Note: the italic text was copied from GW Simulations' talk page. Indentation has been modified. Armedblowfish (talk|mail|contribs) 03:35, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Due to the large amount of content that needs to be converted to a new format, the edit was being conducted over a period of several days, using notepad. So far, I have been concentrating on 21st century pages, such as List of spaceflights (2005) List of spaceflights (2006) and List of spaceflights (2007). There was a clear explanation on the talk page.

They are being processed, my current estimate is that all pages from 1962 to 1969 will be done by Sunday, with the much larger 1960 and 1961 pages following on sometime next week.

Please can you reinstate the tags in question.

If you are interested in helping, please join the WikiProject. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 21:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you left {{inuse}} up for a couple days on a number of "List of spaceflights (year)" articles. This template is intended to prevent [[Help:Edit conflict|edit conflicts], and states that people should not edit the article while the template is up, discouraging contributions. Thus, it should only be used if you currently have an edit box open, and are making a major edit. I believe, however, that the template you want is {{underconstruction}}, which states that although the article is undergoing major revamping, contributors are welcome to help. I believe this is what you are interested in, as it would be consistent with the "This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it." note you have on the pages.
Upon reading the message you left on my talk page, it seems you may have a cause for the template. However, would it be possible for you to just work on one page at a time? Also, I don't know your technical situation, but is there a reason this can't be done in a number of smaller edits, updating the page as you make your changes? Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 21:34, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the post on my talk page. Unfortunatly, the old and new formats are extremly different - compare List of spaceflights (2006) (new) to List of spaceflights (1960) (old) and you'll soon spot a lot of differences, so they cannot be done a bit at a time. It is boring work, so I do most of it when I've nothing better to do. This often involves a computer that has no internet access, so I have to do them in batches because I cannot always just "go and get" the next one when I need it. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 21:42, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
I see. I've restored the inuse templates with a more descriptive message approximating how long, describing the purpose, and suggesting that users note changes they would like made to the article on the talk page (thus encouraging their contributions). I'm not sure if it's a touchy subject for you, but including a description of your technical situation on the talk pages, and/or an invisible comment after the inuse template, might help avoid concern over the amount of time the inuse templates are being left up. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 22:09, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 22:10, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
