[edit] Any similarities between Armenia, Colombia and Armenia, repoblique of armenia.

I'm an Armenian from Colombia. What I heard from my grandparents is that Armenia was named after the ancient, Christian country because of an earthquake that happened there during the colonization of Colombia. What's more Ironic is that Armenia itself passed through an earthquake that almost destroyed central Armenia and it's southern parts back on January 25, 1999. It had registered 6.9 on the Richter scale, killed around a thousand people and made thousands more homeless. As of 2005, some parts of Armenia are still feeling the effects of that earthquake and some families are still living in 'temporary' housing.

Some others say a Armenia, Colombia, was named Armenia in honor of the Christian Armenians who lost their lives in Ottoman Turkey at the hands of the Ottomans around the same time that Colombia was being colonized.
