Star Trek: Armada II is a computer game published by Activision in 2001, based upon the Star Trek universe. The game was developed by Mad Doc Software. It is the sequel to Star Trek: Armada. Star Trek: Armada II was released by Activision a year after they acquired the full rights to all the franchise holding of the PC Game's franchise from Viacom. It was the first of the 3 major Star Trek CP Game sequel titles that was released by Activision from 2001 until their departure from the franchise in 2003.

Another real-time strategy game like the original, it showcases the events in the Alpha Quadrant between the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union, Species 8472, and the Borg.

[edit] Plot Summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

A few months after the events of Star Trek: Armada, the Borg are once again threatening the Alpha Quadrant. The Borg have created fast assimilation pyramids that assimilate entire worlds instantly.

Deciding they could not let the Borg assimilate all of the Alpha Quadrant, Starfleet Command seized control of a transwarp conduit, and attempt to launch a counteroffensive into the Delta Quadrant, Borg space.

While the Federation mounts its attack, the Klingon Empire finds out that the Cardassian Union is planning a strike of its own in the Alpha Quadrant, so the Klingons and Cardassians go head-to-head.

Meanwhile the Borg discover that Species 8472 has found a way to the Alpha Quadrant. The Borg Queen realizes that only by the Borg and Federation working together that they will be able to defeat Species 8472.

[edit] Races

The races available in campaign mode are The United Federation of Planets, The Klingon Empire, and The Borg Collective. In other methods of play, such as Multiplayer and Instant Action (Skirmish), the Cardassians, Romulans, and Species 8472 are added as playable factions. Also, on various sites, there are mods for download that will add races to this game.

While most races' gameplay is essentially the same, Species 8472 are different because of their biotechnology. The latinum (no trade) and crew (one pilot per ship) resources are not used by them. They have no use for planets, and all collected resources are turned into biomatter for growing their ships. Species 8472 have no interest in using other races' technology. Because of this, their ships cannot take over enemy ships and cannot themselves be taken over.

[edit] Modding

There is a community of modders creating new ships, stations, maps, and races for Star Trek: Armada II. There are some which include multi-scifi universes; including Star Wars and Andromeda, and some which change it entirely. Others may add races not included in the original game - these have included the Dominion, the Ferengi, and the Breen.

Another community that 'modifies' the Armada II experience, is the Clan Community. Since its release, Armada II has formed a tight community of players from around the world. Some players have formed clans that play together, and work together, so that the gaming experience can be more enjoyable.

[edit] Rarity

Due to the actions between Activision and Viacom, regarding the Star Trek license, Armada II has become highly sought since it was quickly pulled from the market. Original copies of the program sell on Amazon for over $100. This is up from a starting price of $60 in 2005. Although the Internet auction site eBay lists a few copies for under $100, the hard to obtain nature of the product can not be denied. Although Armada II was included in a multigame package, and was repackaged and resold at the start of the PC "small box" era, it is difficult to obtain in any form.
