The Grand Army of the Republic is a fictional army from the Star Wars saga, specifically Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith that laid the foundations of the Galactic Empire.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Grand Army of the Republic, the successor of the pre-Ruusan Republic military, was created by the cloners on Kamino, and comprised of two hundred thousand "units" (see Size section) and their war machines as of the start of the Clone Wars. After the initial engagements, a million more clone units were added to the ranks of the army. The earliest attempt to recreate the pre-Ruusan Republic military was the Katana fleet.

The creation of the army was ordered by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, though it was actually part of a plot created by the Sith lords to craft an army for his Galactic Empire. Though the clone troopers fought for the Galactic Republic under Jedi leadership during the Clone Wars, the army was turned against the loyalists and the Jedi when the Galactic Empire was formed at the war's end. Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine wielded executive control over the army, and transformed it into the Imperial Army, Stormtrooper Corps, and Navy of his Galactic Empire.

[edit] Size

The size of the Grand Army seems to be vastly smaller than what would be necessary to fight a war involving hundreds of thousands of planets - most conservative estimates[citation needed] of the Galactic Republic and its successor state, the Galactic Empire, at more than a million worlds; meaning that each planet would have less than two Clonetroopers to defend it. Additionally, a number of nations on Earth during the 20th Century had militaries with significantly greater numbers of soldiers -- Nazi Germany, the People's Republic of China, and the Soviet Union are examples. This, combined with the fact that the Confederacy of Independent Systems could create hundreds of thousands or millions of droids in a single day, has led to speculation that the 1.2 million "units" referenced to in Attack of the Clones referred to either the number of soldiers created at the facility Obi-Wan visited, or the term "unit" means a military unit consisting of many individual soldiers. However, one must remember that these clones were of a single man who may very well have been, other than the Jedi, the deadliest man in the galaxy. In addition, in Episode 2, when Obi-Wan visits Kamino, the prime minister tells him "you will find they are vastly superior to droids", meaning that one of these soldiers could potentially take on multiple battle droids and come out on top.
