Armstrong Gun

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Armstrong Gun is a type of muzzleloading, rifled cannon manufactured in England during the Crimean War and the American Civil War. It was manufactured by Armstrong Whitworth.

The gun used rifling to attain greater accuracy and distance, and used a shell that had studs on the outside, which aligned with grooves in the barrel of the cannon. This allowed the shell to rotate when fired, greatly improving its accuracy.
