Armistead Burwell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Armistead Burwell lived in the early 1800s in Dinwiddie County, Virginia as a planter; Burwell owned over fifty slaves, one of whom was Elizabeth Keckley — later she became a close friend of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Armstead was the father of Lizzie Keckly. He later gave her to his son, the Reverend Robert Burwell, as a wedding gift when she was a young teenager.
