[edit] Busts on Northumbrian coinage

I'm not a numismatist, so this may be a stupid question. Are there any coins of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria which show busts of kings? We have a lot of Northumbrian King articles which have no illustrations, so anything interesting from their coinage would be very handy. I've added the Eanbald of Kent thrymsa bust to his article. Hi Angus. I'm afraid there aren't really any numismatic portraits of Northumbrian kings that I know of. Most of the seventh- and eighth-century royal coins feature a rather nice four legged beast that might work at a pinch, and there are some portraits of archbishops of York: full-length ones of Ecgberht (732-66) and a unique gold coin with a facing portrait of Wigmund (837-54). There is one much-debated silver portrait penny which appears to be from some time in the middle of the ninth century but is in the name of EANRED REX. It has been suggested that this is Eanred of Northumbria (810-40), and but it may well be someone else.

Although coins are scanty for Northumbrian portraits, there are definitely some good, relatively early illustrations of Oswald of Northumbria, and quite probably some other kings as well.
