Arizona State Route 67

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

State Route 67 (SR-67) is a forty-two mile, north-south state highway in northern Arizona. Also called the Kaibab Plateau-North Rim Parkway, SR-67 is the sole road that links U.S. Route 89 at Jacob Lake to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Starting from the northern terminus, SR-67 rolls south through the Kaibab National Forest. The road is lined with ponderosa pines for roughly the first twenty miles until large meadows pop up on the west side of the highway. These meadows, sometimes filled with water, are runoff locations for the heavy winter snow. The parkway continues to follow the meadows for about fifteen miles to the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. Once in the park, the road twists and turns through the park and finally terminates at the visitor center at the North Rim. During the winter months, usually mid-November through mid-May, SR-67 is closed south of Jacob Lake due to heavy snowfall.

The alternate name of this highway was given after SR-67 was designated a National Scenic Byway by the Federal Highway Administration.
