Arizona State Route 153

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

State Route 153, also known as SR-153 and the Sky Harbor Expressway, is a road in Maricopa County, Arizona, that runs from the highway's northern terminus at the intersection of 44th Street and Washington Street in Phoenix south to a junction with University Drive. Between the highway's northern terminus and the unfinished intersection with University Drive, it is a controlled access expressway. However, the speed limit (45 mph) is that of an arterial roadway. SR-153 is a north-south route that just skirts the eastern edge of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and along with State Route 143, SR-153 serves East Valley residents with access to the airport, especially as there is no direct access to southbound SR-143 from Sky Harbor. It also provides a direct link between east Phoenix, office developments in the Southbank commercial project, and Tempe.

Currently incomplete, SR-153 has only one exit southbound (to Sky Harbor Blvd) and two exits northbound (to Sky Harbor Blvd and Air Lane), though construction plans for a southern extension of this route to a junction with 40th Street are set to begin as of April 2007 [1]. The airport stretch of SR-153 is by far the shortest expressway in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, both in its current and planned stages.
