In the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, the aristocrat is one of the non-player character classes. They are usually educated, wealthy individuals who were born into high position. Typical aristocrats are rulers and their families, courtiers, and wealthy merchants. They are given the freedom to train in the fields of their choice, for the most part, and often travel widely. With access to all the best goods and opportunities, many aristocrats become formidable individuals. Some even go on adventures with fighters, wizards, and members of other classes, although usually such activities are nothing more than a lark.

[edit] 2nd Edition and Earlier
In editions of D&D before 3rd Edition, NPCs either possessed no levels (they were "0-level") or had levels in PC classes. Nobles typically possessed levels of fighter, or were just background characters with whom interaction was limited.
[edit] 3rd Edition/v.3.5
The 3rd Edition of the D&D Dungeon Master's Guide introduced the NPC classes, including the aristocrat. While less powerful than the PC classes, the aristocrat had abilities more suited to a noble, rather than those of a professional soldier.
[edit] Combat Training
Aristocrats receive regular training in martial arts throughout their lives, particularly in fencing and basic warfare. They are able to proficiently wield all simple and martial weapons, and can use any type of armour and shield (except tower shields). While formidable combatants, aristocrats do not undergo the intense training that warriors and their ilk do, and have a slightly worse attack bonus. They are relatively tough, however, and have an average hit dice (d8).
[edit] Multiclass Restrictions
An aristocrat cannot be a multiclass character unless their first level is in the aristocrat class. This is because being an aristocrat isn't so much a choice as a position one is born into.
[edit] Skills
Class skills for the aristocrat are Appraise, Bluff, Diplomacy, Disguise, Forgery, Gather Information, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Knowledge (all fields), Listen, Perform, Ride, Sense Motive, Speak Language, Spot, Swim, and Survival. They receive 4 skill points per level, plus their Intelligence modifier.
