Aristocrash

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aristocrash is a rock band based in Manchester, England. It was founded in 2001 by singer Pauline Johnston and guitar player Sean O'Meara. Johnston and O'Meara are the only constant members of the band and the band's only songwriters.

Although the band is based in Manchester, none of the members come from there. Johnston is from Glasgow, Scotland and O'Meara is from Nottingham, England.

The band's sound has been compared to that of Slade, Alice Cooper, Prince, T-Rex, The B52s and Kate Bush.

Reviews of the band's music are rarely indifferent. The band's first single, "Disco Girl", received glowing praise from sources such as the BBC, GigWise, Glaswerk and City Life, but was heavily criticised by Unpeeled Magazine, despite Unpeeled's editor stating, "I love this band as much as I hate their music." The review verged on being personally offensive towards members of the band, which prompted Johnston to write to the reviewer thanking him for showing such passion towards their music and taking an interest in their fashion sense. This led to the editor of the fanzine setting up a right-to-reply section on the Unpeeled website in honour of Johnston being able to take the review with good grace and a sense of humour.

Lead singer Johnston is known for her unusual and sometimes erratic behaviour, both onstage and off. This has been put down to her suffering from Asperger's Syndrome, a disorder on the autistic spectrum which sometimes restricts the sufferer's ability to understand what behaviour is or is not appropriate. When performing at the Roadhouse in Manchester in 2005, Pauline shocked members of the audience--including a reviewer from the BBC--by telling them that they had no bass player because he had been killed in a car accident the previous night, but that they had decided to go ahead with the gig. The truth was that the bass player in question had been sacked after he failed to turn up for a photo shoot and interview at a Manchester hotel.

Aristocrash are currently recording their first album with producers Greg Hutchison and Ben Kumar. The process is being overseen by A&R man David Ambrose, who has been involved with the careers of Duran Duran and the Pet Shop Boys and who signed the Sex Pistols to EMI.
