[edit] Character
According to NCIS investigation, Ari Haswari was born in 1969 to Drs. Benjamin Weinstein, who was also a Mossad agent, and Hasmia Haswari, an Arab woman, while they worked at a hospital in Jerusalem. He has two half-sisters from his father's side, Ziva and Tali David. Tali was killed in a Hamas suicide bombing at age 16 and Ziva would eventually help NCIS try to capture him. He graduated from medical school from Edinburgh Medical College in 1994. After graduation, he did his post graduate work at the Edinburgh Center For Infectious Diseases, where he was described by a fellow doctor as a brilliant ladies' man. Afterwards, Ari worked with his mother in a local clinic in the Gaza Strip until her death four years prior to his first contact with NCIS. When he was there, he was working as an undercover Mossad agent.
Special Agent Gibbs speculated that he was the kind of person who had to face death in order to feel alive.
[edit] History
[edit] Early Encounter
Ari was initially listed with NCIS as a member of Hamas. His first contact with NCIS came when Hamas ordered him to retrieve the body of another terrorist who botched a plan to spread smallpox on a navy base. That terrorist was subsequently killed by Gibbs. During the ordeal, Ari holds Mallard, Gerald Jackson, and Special Agent Todd hostage and shoots Jackson in the shoulder when Mallard and Todd try to trick him. Ari, impressed with Gibbs' marksmanship, allows Gibbs a chance kill him when the two have a shootout in the morgue. Although he was wearing a bulletproof vest, Ari still took a huge chance. Immediately, the morgue is stormed by agents, but Ari escapes. Since he never gave his name, no one knew he was, and learning his identity became an obsession for Gibbs who became frustrated when no one seemed to have any idea who he was. In many episodes following Ari's first appearance, a security camera image of Ari could be seen on Gibbs' computer as facial recognition software attempted to match his features to known terrorists or criminals.
A few months later, Ari returned to the US with other terrorists in an ambitious plan to kidnap President George W. Bush and then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who was on an official visit to the United States, as they travelled in Marine One. Ari kidnaps Todd so she can disclose which helicopter is Marine One, but when she tells him that would be impossible since the escort helicopters are indistinguishable from Marine One, Ari kills one of the terrorists and reveals that he is in reality a Mossad agent, and offers to tell the Secret Service about his plan, which is ultimately foiled by the FBI. In discovering that Ari is an undercover agent who has infiltrated Hamas and Al-Qaeda, the CIA allows him to leave the country, much to the dislike of Agent Gibbs, who was ordered to forget about Ari. However, Ari allows Gibbs to meet him alone in the NCIS morgue. Ari tells Gibbs he had to shoot Jackson to keep his cover. Before leaving, Gibbs shoots Ari in the shoulder so that he could "better convince Al-Qaeda."
[edit] Revenge
Later, his obsession with Gibbs gets the better of Ari and goes on a vendetta against him. While on assignment with the FBI to uncover an Al-Qaeda cell in Washington (which, in reality, he was running), Ari breaks contact, kills two Navy operatives, and booby traps the crime scene to kill the NCIS team, which nearly succeeds. He then tries to kill Gibbs in a coffee shop with a bomb, and then orchestrates a terrorist attack against a ship of sailors returning from the Gulf. It is thwarted by NCIS, but as the team searches for other terrorists, Ari kills Agent Todd from a sniper position and escapes; this begins a sadistic cat and mouse game in which Ari uses Gibbs's team as pawns to torment him. Complicating matters, Ari's control officer (and half-sister), Officer Ziva David, still believes Ari is loyal to Mossad and innocent of Todd's murder. However, after his attacks were relatively successful against Gibbs's team, Ari manages to convince some members, including the new director of NCIS, that he is innocent after he sets up another terrorist to take the blame for Agent Todd's murder and the subsequent attacks. Gibbs sets a trap with Officer David to prove to her if Ari is innocent or guilty when he places flowers at Agent Todd's death site, but Ari does not fall for it. Instead, Ari goes to Gibbs's house to finally settle his vendetta against him. He confesses to Gibbs that his vendetta is based on the fact that Gibbs reminds him of his father, who is now a deputy director in Mossad, and resented being groomed to be a mole in Hamas. He turned against Mossad when his mother was killed by an Israeli strike that he believes his father ordered. Before he can assassinate Gibbs, the real trap is sprung; Ari is shot and killed by Officer David. The official report that Gibbs prepares for NCIS, however, states that he killed Ari.
