Argentine Open

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Argentine Open is one of the oldest national opens. First played in 1905, it has featured numerous notable winners including major champions Jimmy Demaret (1941), Lloyd Mangrum (1946), Tom Weiskopf (1979), Craig Stadler (1992), Mark Calcavecchia (1993, 1995), Mark O'Meara (1994) and Jim Furyk (1997). In 2001, the tournament featured on the European Tour for the first and only time. However, the Argentine financial crisis later in 2001 substantially reduced prize-money in subsequent years. In December 2005, the tournament became part of the European Challenge Tour (being the first event of their 2006 season) and was won by Kevin Stadler. The championship also features as part of the Tour de las Americas.

The record for most victories is held by 1967 British Open champion Roberto DeVicenzo who won nine times between 1944 and 1974. Vicente Fernandez has won eight times over 32 years between 1968 and 2000, the latter victory coming in a play-off against fellow Argentine, Eduardo Romero.
