Lieutenant Arex, voiced by James Doohan, was a recurring character on Star Trek: The Animated Series which ran on NBC from 1973 to 1975.

Arex was a Starfleet officer assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise as Navigator. Arex was a member of a tripodal species (the Edosians) and had three arms and legs. Arex also sometimes took the comm, but he rarely left the ship on landing party missions.

The slugs used in Dr. Phlox's medical bay are "Edosian slugs".

Arex was first seen in "Beyond the Farthest Star" (a non-speaking role), and he was featured in fourteen episodes: "One of Our Planets Is Missing" (his first speaking role), "The Lorelei Signal", "The Infinite Vulcan", "Once Upon a Planet", "Mudd's Passion", "The Terratin Incident", "The Ambergris Element", "The Eye of the Beholder", "The Pirates of Orion", "Bem", "The Practical Joker", "Albatross", "How Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth" and "The Counter-Clock Incident". He also appeared in the first TAS episode, "Beyond the Farthest Star", but did not speak.

Arex was referred to in one scene in David Gerrold's 1980 Star Trek novel The Galactic Whirlpool, and in A.C. Crispin's 1988 novel Time for Yesterday, a reference is made to a Commander Arex. He, along with Lt. M'ress, also appeared in the 1980s Star Trek comics published by DC Comics (first series).

Arex was introduced into Peter David's Star Trek: New Frontier series of novels, with the full name of Arex Na Eth, via a timewarp. He appeared, along with M'Ress, in the 24th Century, and was given a post aboard the U.S.S. Trident, under Captain Shelby. He first appeared in Gateways: Cold Wars, and returned for each installment in the New Frontier series since then.
