Aretha Street
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arethas Street (Greek: Odos Aretha), is Patras' major street running from Notara with Afstralias Streets up to Panepistimiou Street (elevation: about 30 to 40 m). The street serves as a road between the neighborhoods of Agyia and Sykaina and have also served with the GR-8/E55 (Athens - Corinth - Patras) and the GR-5 with the GR-48/E65 since the 1970s. Its total length is approximately 1 km. The street runs within the Gulf of Patras and contains two lanes with mostly parking spaces.
Residential buildings with older and modern architectures covers the area with a few farmland, shops as well as stores and other services sporadically. Much of the streets intersecting are named after the major rivers of Greece, the examples are seen below.
[edit] History
The street was paved in mid to late 20th century. The area became the national highway in the 1970s. Farmlands dominated the street until housing developments with six to eight-storey residential properties were added at a high capacity in the 1980s and the 1990s. Street lights were also added in the 1980s at the new GR-8 intersection
