North American area codes 214, 469, and 972 are state of Texas telephone area codes for numbers in the Dallas area. Area code 214 was one of the original area codes established in October 1947. Area code 972 was created on September 14, 1996 by splitting the Dallas suburbs from Dallas city proper, but was converted to an overlay when area code 469 was introduced on July 1, 1999. The result was three area codes overlaying the same area, and ten-digit dialing required for all calls.

Counties served by these area codes:

[edit] History

Area code 972 was assigned to the Dallas suburban areas in April 1997, with 214 retained for the city of Dallas proper, due to the growth of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. 214 and 972 numbers could call each other for the most part without incurring charges. However, ten-digit dialing became mandatory at this point.

When area code 469 was added a mere 16 months later (December 1998), the 972/214 split was discontinued and all three area codes were overlayed with each other. Thus, a customer could possibly have phones in all three area codes.
