The area code (939) for Puerto Rico, operates as an overlay for the original local (787) telephone area code.
As an overlay, the area code was added on or around the date September, 2001. The (939) area code was created following (787)'s split from the legacy regional (809) area code.
When in Puerto Rico, the full area code + seven digit phone number must be dialed. When calling to Puerto Rico from anywhere in the United States or Canada dial, 1(787 or 939) + seven digit phone number.

- In an episode of The Simpsons entitled A Tale of Two Springfields the (939) area code was created for what became New Springfield after the (636) area code ran out of valid numbers.
