Area code 773

The telephone area code 773 was formed in the city of Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1996. The entire city of Chicago—and all of Chicagoland—were originally area code 312, but eventually the city itself was split between 312 in the Downtown/Loop and surrounding areas, and 773, comprising the vast physical majority of the city and all outlying areas within city limits.

While most large business and tourists identify with the 312 part of Chicago, the city as a whole is strongly identified by its diverse and vibrant neighborhoods, and most Chicago neighborhoods fall within the 773 area code. The area code has also been popularized by a series of t-shirts with the slogan "773 FOREVER", a reflection of residents' strong sense of pride and attachment to the area and their identification with urban living over the suburbs.^{[citation needed]}

The inclusion of the 773 area code comes about because of the actions of the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) body that will be overseeing the creation of many new area codes in the coming years.^{[citation needed]}
