Area code 671

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The area code 671 is the local telephone area code of Guam. The 671 area code was created from the international 671 code, which was done in 1997.

[edit] Origins

Prior to 1997 callers in the Mainland United States had to dial the international 011 first, followed by the "country code" 671 and then the seven-digit telephone number. This was a considerable financial burden for people on the US Mainland with people with family members or friends in the US territory of Guam, especially for those who were stationed in US military bases there. After Guam was added to the North American Numbering Plan, all barriers and the high costs of international long-distance calls to the mainland United States and Canada were removed.

When in Guam, only the seven-digit phone number is used. When a person in Guam calls anywhere in the United States or Canada, he or she simply dials 1 and then the area code and phone number. For callers in the US or Canada calling to Guam, one first dials 1-671, followed by the seven-digit phone number.
