Area code 646
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 646 is a New York City telephone area code, created July 1, 1999, due to Area code 212 and Area code 917 running out of available numbers. It was a controversial new overlay in Manhattan because many New Yorkers rebelled at the idea of a different area code, and for a time it was considered that "real" New Yorkers had 212 phone numbers.[citation needed] More recently, 10-digit dialing has become required in New York City, making 646 a more acceptable number since you now have to dial 10 digits for all 212 and 646 numbers.
An episode of the television series Seinfeld, lampooned the 646 area code. In the episode "The Maid", Elaine has her phone number changed to a 646 unintentionally.
