North American area codes 214, 469, and 972 are state of Texas telephone area codes for numbers in the Dallas area. Area code 214 was one of the original area codes established in October 1947. Area code 972 was created on September 14, 1996 by splitting the Dallas suburbs from Dallas city proper, but was converted to an overlay when area code 469 was introduced on July 1, 1999. The result was three area codes overlaying the same area, and ten-digit dialing required for all calls.

[edit] History
Area code 469 was added in December 1998, a mere 16 months after area code 972 was added, due to continuing growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
However, unlike the earlier 972/214 split, 469 was added as an overlay. Furthermore, the original 214/972 split between Dallas and its suburbs was discontinued, resulting in all three area codes being overlays. Thus, a customer could possibly have phones in all three area codes.
