"Are We the Waiting" is the fifth track on the normal edition of Green Day's seventh studio album American Idiot. In some countries, it is the fourth track, because tracks three and four ("Holiday" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams") are combined into a single track and "Are We the Waiting" and "St. Jimmy" are combined into a single track. These are also combined together on iTunes, because they are a single medley. "Are We the Waiting" is one of the slower songs on the album, and one of the songs on the album not containing profane language (others include "Give Me Novacaine", "She's a Rebel", "Extraordinary Girl", "Wake Me Up When September Ends", and "Whatsername"). This song is about how Jesus of Suburbia splits personalities. In the lyric book, the date is shown to be Easter Sunday, perhaps signifying how Jesus of Suburbia is resurrected as St. Jimmy. It also could signify that Jimmy has prophetic dreams, as shown in the lyric: "This dirty town was burning down in my dreams...", where as in "Letterbomb", the city does burn.

"Are We the Waiting" is the fourth song on Green Day's live album Bullet in a Bible, and is the only song with no commentary on the album other than "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)".

The song is particularly notable for its anthemic chorus, and unusually sparse percussion. Many feel that this song represents the anarchic side of Green Day, reminiscent of the Sex Pistols.
