Arden municipality

Arden is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 228 km², and has a total population of 8,513 (2005). Its mayor is Hans Christian Maarup, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Arden.

Neighboring municipalities are Hadsund to the east, Skørping to the northeast and north, Støvring to the northwest, Nørager to the west, Hobro to the southwest, and Mariager to the south, separated from Arden municipality by the waters of Mariager Fjord.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined Astrup, Store Arden, Oue-Valsgaard, Rold-Vebbestrup and Rostrup municipalities.

By January 1, 2007 Arden municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Hadsund and Hobro municipalities, and part of Mariager municipality to form the new Mariagerfjord municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 769 km² and a total population of 43,049 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").

[edit] The town of Arden

The town of Arden is situated south of the city of Aalborg, and north of the city of Randers. Arden was originally named Hesselholt but changed its name when the Jutland railroad reached the city in the 1870's. Today the town has 2.429 inhabitants (2004). The town is situated on the southern outskirt of Denmark's largest forest, Rold Skov (Rold Forest).
