Archives nationales (France)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Archives nationales (in French; English: "National archives"), established in their present form in 1806, preserve the national archives of the French state, apart from the archives of the "Ministère de la défense" (Ministry of Defence) and the "Ministère des affaires étrangères" (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), as these two ministries have their own archive services, the Service historique de la défense and the Archives diplomatiques respectively. The archives of those government departments which have been decentralised are to be found in the archives of the various départements.

The Archives nationales are under the administration of the "Archives de France", in the "Ministère de la Culture" (Ministry of Culture). They consist of five centres:

(Historical centre of the Archives nationales) Located since 1806 in a group of buildings comprising the Hôtel de Soubise and the Hôtel de Rohan in the district of Le Marais in Paris, this centre preserves documents from before 1958 and the archives of the heads of state. Some of the documents kept here date back to the Merovingians.

[edit] Centre des archives contemporaines

(Centre for contemporary archives) Located in Fontainebleau since 1969, this centre is the repository for documents mostly later than 1958.

[edit] Centre des archives d'Outre Mer

(Centre for overseas archives) Located at Aix-en-Provence since 1969, this centre preserves documents on the former French possessions overseas, originating both from the responsible ministry and from the colonial administrations of these territories.

[edit] Centre des archives du monde du travail

(Centre for Business and Labour Archives) Located at Roubaix since 1993, this centre preserves the archives of businesses, of trades unions, of associations and societies, and of architects.

[edit] Centre national du microfilm

(National microfilm centre) Located in Saint-Gilles-du-Gard (Gard), in the Château d'Espeyran, since 1973, this centre preserves original microforms of documents held in other archive centres, both national and regional.

[edit] The future Centre at Pierrefitte-sur-Seine

The construction of a new national archive centre at Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, in Seine-Saint-Denis, was decided in 2004. It will be dedicated to contemporary archives and is intended to receive 60 linear kilometres of records from the Centre historique des Archives nationales and 120 linear kilometres of records from the Centre des archives contemporaines, which will relieve the fullness of both centres. It will be built by the Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas.
