Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (originally Aransas Migratory Waterfowl Refuge) is a 70,504 acre (285 km²) park situated on the Gulf Coast of the U.S. state of Texas, along San Antonio Bay. Fauna includes alligators, javelina, snakes, and bobcats, which inhabit the refuge's grasslands, thickets of oak, freshwater ponds, and marshland.
Birdlife includes ducks, herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills, and the endangered whooping cranes, whose population has recovered significantly since the 1940s.

Matagorda Island State Park, a large part of the Aransas Wildlife refuge was ceased from the Hawes family in the 1940's and never returned. See http://www.matagordaisland.com/history.htm
