Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Two teenage girls, Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (JoJo), live at the coast of Florida and regret that they will be separated in five days, since Hailey has to move to Australia because of her mother's job. One night after a violent storm they find mermaid Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) in the swimming pool of their beach club. The girls are frightened at first, but then curious. They start to talk with Aquamarine and promise her they will be back in the morning. When they return they find Aquamarine in a nearby shed, but with a human body instead of a mermaid's, which Aquamarine tells them she can have on land during the day if she doesn't get wet. Claire and Hailey befriend Aquamarine, who tells them that she came to land to find love-- a vibration she knows nothing about, but desires desperately. She tells them that she made a deal with her father that if she found love in three days, she won't have to go through with an arranged marriage. She immediately notices a handsome lifeguard named Raymond (Jake McDorman) and enlists the help of the two girls to win his heart in return for a wish. The girls, of course, see their opportunity to keep Hailey from moving and immediately start helping her. However, Claire and Hailey's rival, the spoiled girl Cecilia (Arielle Kebbel) tries her best to stop them, but fails. Eventually, it is not Raymond that convinces Aquamarine that humans can love, but Claire and Hailey, who are willing to give up their wish and their lives in the aiding of a friend.

Aquamarine was released on DVD on June 13, 2006.

Altogether, the plot of the film bears little resemblence to that of the book. In the book, it is Claire's departure that is feared; she will be leaving for Florida in the next month. The beach club is condemned for demolition; only the girls are regular visitors, and only Raymond, the young bartender, maintains his job. After a violent storm, the girls visit the club, discovering Aquamarine. This Aquamarine has left her family because she is quite spoiled and selfish; she believes that she will never take orders from anyone again. Furthermore, she is enraptured by the sight of Raymond.

Hailey and Claire make Aquamarine a promise. If she agrees to go home, they will introduce her to Raymond and allow her to spend an evening in his company. Aquamarine, somewhat disheveled as a result of being away from the ocean, consents to the offer.

The girls borrow a wheelchair from Claire's grandfather, then decorate a dress for Aquamarine. They bring her to meet Raymond, with whom she spends a happy evening. As she is going, she leaves with him a seashell, which he will thereafter use to contact her by speaking her name into it.

Later, the girls smuggle Aquamarine out of the club and into the ocean during the club's farewell party. Raymond glimpses her true identity, but does not call anyone else's attention to it. Hailey and Claire promise never to forget Aquamarine or each other.

Claire and her grandparents leave for Florida. There, she finds Raymond, who has also come to live. He has met Aquamarine while swimming in the nearby ocean, and is therefore pleased to make frequent meetings with her. Hailey has decided to be friendly toward her new neighbor Susannah, and plans for visits to Claire.

[edit] Trivia

  • The violent storm portrayed in the movie was Hurricane Katrina.
  • The movie, which takes place in Florida, was actually filmed in Australia. This is known by the brief shot of the ice-cream van, which is obviously a non-American model.
  • Aquamarine's tail took two hours to get on and off.
  • The producers only flew in five actors from the USA; the characters for Hailey, Claire, Aquamarine, Cecilia and Raymond. The rest were Australian actors. Some are quite well-known in Australia – for example, Roy Billing and Julia Blake, who play Claire's grandparents, have had long distinguished acting careers. Claudia Karvan who plays Hailey's mother is an award winning TV star. Tammin Sursok (Marjorie) is a TV and pop star.
  • When the girls are reading magazines, magazines such as Total Girl and Girlfriend can be seen, this is a giveaway that the film is shot in Australia.
