Apskritis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An apskritis (plural apskritys) is an administrative unit of Lithuania. Its name is from the Lithuanian word "apskritas", meaning "round" or "circular".

As of 2006, Lithuania has 10 apskritys (see Apskritys of Lithuania), although during the interwar period it had more than 30. Sizes and definitions of these apskritys are somewhat different.

The term is distinctly Lithuanian and therefore should not be translated to "county", "region", "territory" or other such words, which all have a translation to Lithuanian as something other than "apskritis".
