Apoteket is the national pharmaceuticals retailing monopoly in Sweden. Apoteket AB, formerly Apoteksbolaget, is a government owned enterprise reporting to the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.
In 2006, the newly elected centre-right alliance government declared that the Swedish pharmacy monopoly would be broken up and the market opened to free competition. How the monopoly will fall and who will be able to sell medicines and operate pharmacies in Sweden will be decided during 2007.
By 1st January 2009 the Swedish pharmacy monopoly is expected to end.
