Apolima is the smallest of the four inhabited islands of Samoa. It is a little less than one square kilometer in size. It is located in Apolima Strait between Upolu and Savai'i and is 2.4 km northwest of the westernmost edge of Upolu's fringing barrier reef and the tiny island of Nu'ulupa. It is part of Aiga-i-le-Tai district, like the other islands in the Apolima Strait. The island is a rim of an extinct crater that reaches a height of 165 m. The population is 88 (census of 2001), all in Apolima-Uta, the only village, which is in located at the northern end. 400 meters to the north lies tiny nameless rock with a height of 12.2 m and size of just 1400 m².
