Apocalypso is a novel by the British author Robert Rankin. It deals with Porrig's adventures in a magic bookshop and a giant telepathic vegetable from outer space.

Padraig is based on a bloke called Padraig who owned a bookshop, the bloke called James was the editor of a real newspaper in Brentford.

It also stars Russell the railwayman, who is in fact based on a real life Steam Engine Fitter from the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.

Sir John Rimmer may be some sort of reflection on the great John Rimmer.

And Croydon is exactly as protrayed.
