Aphanotorulus is a genus of freshwater fish in the Loricariidae family of order Siluriformes. The type species is Aphanotorulus frankei.[1] and the genus is found in South America in the Peruvian region of the Amazon area.

Typical length is 15cm, typical habitat would be relatively fast moving water over a shallow gravel bed.

The genus derives from the Greek, aphanes meaning hidden plus the Latin, torulus meaning = muscle or little string[1]

Externally similar in appearance, Aphanotorulus is distinguished from Hypostomus by the difference in papillae in the buccal cavity (mouth). In comparison with a 'typical' plecostomid eg a common pleco Aphanotorulus is slightly more flattened.

This genus shows sexual dimorphism, males develop elongated single pointed teeth[2], odontodes along the flanks of the tail of A. Ammophilus (Image from scotcat.com)

[edit] Reclassification

In addition to having several Hypostomus species identified as Aphanotorulus unicolor, more recently (2004) Armbruster has suggested that the genus be discarded altogether and its members included in an expanded Hypostomus genus.[3]

[edit] Species

Aphanotorulus ammophilus is a synonym of Hypostomus ammophilus and is also known by the L-numbers, L94 and L123. It is found in the Potuguesa River Basin. Colouring is round dark spots on a light background.[4] The spots on the fin rays mostly do not touch the fin spines.[2]

Aphanotorulus frankei is a synonym of Aphanotorulus unicolor and Hypostomus unicolor. It is also known by the L-number L109.

Plecostomus madeirae , popoi , micropunctatus, chaparae have been suggested for inclusion in the Aphanotorulus genus. Further to this it has been suggested that Aphanotorulus chaparae, A. frankei, A. madeirae, A. micropunctatus, and A. popoi are synonyms of A. unicolor.[5]
