Anubis, the Dark Warlord of Cruelty (known as Oni Mashou, Ogre Demon General Shutendouji in YST) was the leader of the four Dark Warlords and was by far the most arrogant. His Cruelty armor is infused with the Virtue Chuu (Loyalty), and his weapon is a kusari-gama (sickle and chain). His surekill is Quake With Fear (called Ko Rai Sen (Red Lightning Flash) in YST).

Before he was one of the Dark Warlords, he was a warrior who took many lands for his clan. Talpa saw the potential in him and recruited him to be one of his warlords. It was later that the Ancient One helped Anubis see that Talpa was merely using him as a tool; he subsequently tried to escape, but ultimately failed and was absorbed into Talpa.

After Talpa was defeated by the hands of the Ronins, Anubis was presumed dead, but he soon reappeared wearing the Ancient One's clothing. Although no one trusted him at first, he continued to help the Ronins in their fight against Talpa, who had revealed himself to them. It was only after he proved his worth that the heroes trusted him. He managed to send Ryo and Rowen to the Nether Realm and help Mia and Yuli find the Jewel of Life.

He, Mia, and Yuli soon ventured to the Nether Realm to assist Ryo and Rowen in their rescue attempt for the others. It was then that he came into contact with Lady Kayura. It was later revealed that she was the last living member of the Ancient Clan. In a battle with her, he broke the amulet that Talpa used to control her.

Later, in a struggling battle, Anubis called forth his armor (with the Ancient One's help) one last time to fight his fellow Warlords and a possessed Lady Kayura. It was in this final clash between Anubis and Kayura, in which Anubis absorbed Kayura's Star-sword Scream and used all of his energy to drive Badamon from her body, also allowing his armor to be placed onto her. With this task performed, Anubis fulfilled his duties and died.

Special Note: Anubis' Japanese name, Shutendouji, is a reference to a demon from Japanese folklore, notable for hating beans (as did the YST version of the character).
