Anubias barteri var. nana grows along shallow portions of forest rivers in Cameroon, Africa, usually partially emersed. Tropica, a planted aquarium company in Europe, was the first to grow this plant commercially in the 1970s.

In aquaria, this decorative plant requires little in the way of special care from the aquarist. For example, it can grow in low light situations where most other aquatic plants would soon perish. Its only drawback is its slow growth, which often results in the accumulation of spot algae on the older leaves.

The leaves start from a rhizome and have a lancelate shape. It is colored in dark green with a shining surface. Although anubias are a hardy plant variety, they do grow best in strong light, with clean water at a temperature of 25° C. Outside these parameters, plant growth may be sluggish. This aquatic plant reproduces asexually, using rhizomes which may develop up to 6-8 small plants simultaneously. These will then divide when proper roots have developed, allowing the young plant to grow independently. The maximum length is 10 cm.
