[edit] Bangla wikipedia

Hi, From your edits, I assume you are a Bengali speaker (correct me if I'm wrong). So, would you like to take a look at the Bangla wikipedia? You'd need Bangla unicode fonts and Bangla rendering support enabled .. (IE on XP is fine).

Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks

[edit] Hi

Hi Antorjal! You are partially correct in pointing out the shortcoming of the article Feluda. Building on the character is VERY important which the article almost totally lacks at present. I wish somebosy would try to build the article someday in the desired way. Bye the way, you have done great job on Midnapore. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:27, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi! You remind me of that Anandamela! I hope I have it. I have almost all the issues starting from 1987 October, barring a few that have been given/stolen (as usual)! In fact, I had all the issues stacked according to years. I'll try to find that issue in 1 week, if I get to return home.
We need many more contributors from Kolkata and West Bengal. You know, three city articles of West Bengal — Kalimpong, Kolkata and Darjeeling are featured articles. I wish one day West Bengal could be made into one. But that is a tough job. See Kerala (a featured article) for the excellent standard of the article. In fact, another wish was Netaji but that is a very controversial issue and regular edit-wars are common. May be some day!!
Bye the way, do not forget to sign your messages (click the third button from the right in the edit button panel hovering over the edit box - this will place three tilds ~~~, and you are done). Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:41, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Midnapore and Ankur

Thank you so much for your message! I've been waiting for quite a while to hear from anyone who knew anything about either Midnapore or Ankur, and you seem to know quite a bit about both!! How much luckier could I be???

My main complaint about the Midnapore article is that it used a little bit of opinionated vocabulary. It still does, to some extent ("...famous as one of the brightest districts in the history..." "water is a precious commodity..." (I currently think that should be "scarce" or "rare," but I'm not sure whether or not this carries a POV/bias)). But still, you seem to have improved it a lot more, so thanks! (By the way, I'm sure Midnapore IS one of the brightest districts and that water IS a precious commodity as far as the residents' opinions are concerned, but Wikipedia aims to be objective.)

Ankur is the only Shyam Benegal film I've seen (isn't it a pity? :)), and it's the only article I have created on the English Wikipedia so far. (I have refrained from creating other articles on the English Wikipedia because its mirrors in other languages are so underdeveloped!!). I've heard his other movies are just as good, so I'm eager to see them! It would be so, so nice to see Nishant (but please, DON'T give away the plot!!).

I'm guessing that you've seen Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, right? I absolutely LOVE the Apu Trilogy. I like Ankur more, but for a second-generation Indian like me, just seeing people live life the way it was during the generation of my parents is amazing enough. Hopefully someday I'll also be able to (1) get some of Satyajit Ray's other films and (2) know Bengali fluently. (For now, I know SOME Bengali, or Bangla if you prefer. I can understand some of the smaller lines like "Ki re?...Dikhiti dikhiti!" at the beginning of Pather Panchali). In fact, I just skimmed through Aparajito and Apur Sansar this afternoon! --Kuaichik 02:23, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks For Your "Ramblings"! :)

And thank YOU for changing the sections!! Yeah, I guess you could say that Wikipedia is about "hacking and slashing" whatever you feel like, as long as you don't get your own POV in there somehow (though I think you were assuming that the "hackers and slashers" would keep following basic Wikipedia guidelines :)).

I'm sure Nishant IS phenomenal, because Ankur was, too! My dad (or "Appa" as I would call him in Malayalam) bought me the DVD for Ankur for my birthday but gave it to me in advance. (Thank goodness he did, too, or else I probably would have sacrificed my studies for that movie!!).

It seems like you're a rather new member; I'm pretty new, myself. I joined at the beginning of this month (roughly). It's been really nice to meet you! By the way, just out of curiosity, (hope this isn't too personal a question but...) how old are you? I'm seventeen (turning eighteen on Aug. 29). --Kuaichik 03:26, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

By the way, could you by any chance help me out with the Ankur (film) page? For example, if you happened to understand any of the cultural details (e.g. what festival is shown at the beginning; what "Damdamdora" means; what card game Surya, Swami, and his friends are playing), please write something on my discussion page. If you can add to the article itself, please feel free to do so! Thanks!

[edit] Pratidwandi

Today (Aug. 29) is my birthday, and my father gave me the entire collection of Satyajit Ray as a birthday present! A few hours later, we saw Pratidwandi together. You've seen it before, haven't you? We both have a question about the ending. --Kuaichik 23:44, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you! I'll try asking the question anyway. The DVD version I now have includes an ending where Siddhartha is writing a letter to Keya, saying that he had moved out of Kolkotha, dejected, when suddenly he heard the sound of the bird he remembered from his childhood. He also hears funereal chants of "Ram Ram Sat Sat" in the background, but this time, it is not someone in his family who has passed away.

My dad, though, remembers a different ending where Siddhartha gets a letter from Keya. He goes to the window to read it. It is very informal and unpretentious, beginning with the word "Shuno" and ending with the word "Thumi." Do you, by any chance, remember such an ending? If so, do you remember anything about what the letter actually said in between those two words? --Kuaichik 02:06, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

O maa! (Very, very common expression in Satyajit Ray movies...:)) Looks like the version you're talking about has the same ending as what I call "the DVD version." Did Ray, perhaps, edit the ending that early? My dad first saw it in the 1970s (possibly in Mumbai but more likely at Berkeley), which means maybe a little earlier than you (but not much earlier). --Kuaichik 02:28, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I actually am interested in writing a review of Pratidwandi, as you can see on my user page (if you look under the rather long list of articles I plan to (slowly) edit!). I also plan to help out with the Apu Trilogy movie articles, and I can add anything needed on the Seemabaddha and Ashani Sanket pages.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I'm going to watch Sonar Kella tomorrow evening; that should be fun...! --Kuaichik 21:19, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Hi Antorjal! How are you? It's nice to see acrivities in Feluda, Byomkesh and related pages. and of course Tenida! Sadly, I could not go to home yet, and could not retrieve the old Satyajit Ray Anandamela issue. Lately I have been trying to upgrade the article West Bengal. Has improved over last 2–3 weeks. Needs more work. Have a look in your free time. Bye. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:44, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

The Stoneman article can be nominated for Did you know on the main page. Can you provide some more references?--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:21, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Very nice article! It's on the main page now. If I could suggest adding in-line citations (see WP:CITE for the details and instructions) and the article will be even better. Many thanks -- Samir धर्म 11:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Map of East and West Midnapur

Huh! I have found out a way to develope maps of East and West Midnapur. See this map. Now go to this website, and download "List of AC Name" from "Download data". An excel file will be downloaded listing all the aseembly constituencies with their districts. From this data and the map, a map showing east and west Midnapur can be developed. What do you think? If you think the method is ok, I'll refer this to well-known map-makers like Planemad (talk contribs). Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:00, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Unicode

Have I given you the links to Avro, the typing system I use? See here. It includes the Phonetic typing system (you need to choose that after installation) and also the fonts. It's very easy to use ... to write অন্তর্জাল, you'd have to type o-n-t-o-r-r-j-a-l. Let me know if you need more help. Thanks. --Ragib 17:20, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments on the AfD page. I think it was quiet brusque for someone to take that article to AfD. No matter how you define Hinduism, you cannot keep the atheistic part out of it.

And yes, I checked the Byomkesh bakshi talk page just after you left your comments there.nids(♂) 07:18, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Satyajit Ray Edits (Sonar Kella)

I just finished watching Sonar Kella (or, as Mukul calls it, Shonaaaar Kellaa!) about half an hour ago. It's the first Satyajit Ray film I've seen with entire dialogues in Hindustani. I thought it might be interesting to note that, although the film is in Bengali, some Hindustani dialogue is included since Sonar Kella mostly takes place in Rajasthan.

I also realized that Pratidwandi is similar in this respect: it includes entire dialogues in English and, of course, the Bengali dialogues themselves are highly seasoned with English words and phrases ("Do you serve monkey's brain here?" "New Markete pakkhi aachhe?" etc.). --Kuaichik 03:35, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, I've started editing Satyajit Ray movie articles. I have edited the Pather Panchali article (wrote the title and plot sections and deleted some POV), because that is the first Ray film I ever saw. (Some Indians seem to think it's either too serious or too boring, but I love it! For Durga, puffed rice and tamarind water is a treat. For someone like me who hasn't spent his childhood in India, Pather Panchali will do!) --Kuaichik 05:22, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated. On 9 September 2006, a fact from the article Phage ecology, which you recently nominated, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. [edit] help needed

Hi! West Bengal was in FAC but it failed for proper resons. One of the reasons put forward in objections was incomplete "Flora and Fauna" section. You told you were interested in that section. Could you please help expand thats section (and others also). I feel discussion on flora is definitely incomplete. The article is in Peer review now. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:14, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Need not hurry. It is no more at FAC. Its in Peer Review now. Next time, it will be more solid when put in FAC. It was in the process of improvement when another user put it in FAC! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:56, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Districts of Bangladesh/ West Bengal week

Hi, I don't know if you have been able to configure Bangla unicode viewing/typing support yet.. but if you have, I'd suggest coming to Bangla wikipedia to work on the Districts of West Bengal. We have declared the week 9/15-9/22 to be the district articles improvement week, and will work on all 64 districts of Bangladesh , and also the ones from WB.

We only have one or two people from WB now working on bn-wiki, so if you have time, please add to the WB district articles there.

Let me know if you need any help with Bangla unicode. Thanks. --Ragib 00:43, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Matir moina

In case of adding it to DYK, isn't the Cannes award more notable than the Academy award nomination? --Ragib 02:24, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Depends where you are. In America, nobody bats an eye for the Cannes while people are ibsessed with the Oscars (nickname for Academy Awards}.Bakaman Bakatalk 02:40, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
The Cannes award is probably more notable but I was lazy and the name of the official award that Matir Moina won was pretty long (FIPRESCI ...short for Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique or in English known as International Federation of Film Critics) award at the Cannes film festival. So I followed the KISS theory of advertising. Keep-it-simple-silly. :) --Antorjal 02:44, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] stamp

Fair use Stamps are usable ONLY in illustrating the stamp, rather than the stamps subject. So, you can't really substitute a photograph in a bio article with a stamp. It is ok to use the stamp in the article ON the stamp.

I had raised the issue in Admin's noticeboard several times, and the discussion there verified this point.

Please try to find a photo of Matangini Hazra. It shouldn't be too hard ... right? I'll also look into it. Also, if she's a Bengali, can you please add her name in Bangla? I don't want to add it before I am sure she is a Bengali. Thanks. --Ragib 22:54, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I added the bn name, and commented out the stamp image. As for writing Bangla, there are several webbased forms for doing that without learning any keyboards or installing anything. Check out this. To write মাতঙ্গিনী, you need to type matng/inI there. The / is for hasant. --Ragib 23:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
BTW, if you want a better solution to write Bangla unicode anywhere, you might try out Avro (2nd link on google). This is a typing manager for WinXP (no versions in Linux or Mac, unfortunately), after installing it, just choose the phonetic mode. The rest of typing in Bangla is just like "Daal-bhat" .... very easy. Hope to see you often in bn wiki too. We have a disproportionately low number of West Bengali editors there, so need to balance the articles urgently. Thanks. --Ragib 01:07, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your comments at Jana Gana Mana

Dear Antorjal, I wanted to respond to a particular comment from you on the Jana Gana Mana. Earlier I was busy with other stuff and then I did not want to put personalized talk on that page, so I am putting my thoughts here. You said that If one cares so much about the Hindi language then I can point out a million articles that need to be created regarding it instead of spending so much energy on the talk page. Let me tell you my friend, that I do care about Hindi language. It is my other tongue, apart from whatever official/ social status it has in India. But on that talk page, its not about a particular language. We were just discussing some facts about our national anthem based on references and citations (which were provided when asked for). But the problem is that there are some people who are not ready to read/ understand the references and just want to push their POVs. The initial discussion was fine. Everyone should understand what is right and what is not right. But this time, people were just digging the old graves for no reason. The particular thing I did not like was that even though during a similar discussion about Hindi on Hindi page, we have already discussed these things, but someone, in the name of logical argument, was again bad mouthing my mother tongue. Why should I tolerate it. Will you? As a matter of fact, let me tell you that I have studied Bangla for 6 years in primary and secondary school and at my hometowm Varanasi we live with a lot of Bengalis. Currently I am in Bangalore surrounded with Kannadigas and I am also trying to learn Kannada a little bit. I am not against any language. Why should I be. But at the same time why should I tolerate some extreme POV pusher to defame my language with his day-dreamt thoughts.

I am not endorsing the POVs of other users who also have shown the other extreme, but I want to ask you guys, if you are neutral and are quick to warn Subuddhi, mahawiki and Arya, then why you never gave any such warning to Sarvagnya. I have asked the same question to Sameer Khan also. You can see his talk page for my question and his answer.

That said, please let me know which article you were talking about which need help from the Hindi point of view. I am ready to do as much as I can. Thanks. --APandey 07:05, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. No need to feel sorry and all. I did not understand you wrong. The only point I was trying to make is that sometimes (actually many times) when the user like *him* see that no one except the regular ones are opposing him, he tends to think that he has unconditional support from everyone. He even cites this kind of support (e.g. comments of his last edit at the Jana Gana Mana talk page). The fact is that we are not here to make new friends or foes. We are all here for a cause and let that cause be to spread knowledge by collaboration and by maintaining a NPOV. Thanks again. --APandey 18:08, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 7 October 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Dantan, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Ghanada

I liked your addition of Ghanada and then read through some of the other characters. It is certainly enjoyable reading. Keep it up. -- P.K.Niyogi 05:24, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal talks

Hi! Of course Portal:West Bengal is feasible. Some sections in a portal needs regular attention, like the News section, and the Did You Know section. Less regular attention is needed for selected article, selected biography and things like that. We don't need to have a "Today's selected article"..."This weeke's selected article" may be enough. In fact I remember there was a time when we talked about week's selected article in Portal: India, too. Selected picture may pose a problem, but can be handled. Portal: Gujarat is also a nice one. Portal: Goa is a bit less maintained. Portal:Tamil Nadu is in early stage. It's high time we started the portal. The number of editors from/ about West Bengal is increasing. And the article West Bengal is also ready for an FAC, except that map thing and a few minor points. So it's a nice time tostart the portal. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:52, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portal is ready

Hi! After sending you the previous message, I thought why not give it a try today itself? So I started building up the portal. It's not an easy job. Anyway, the portal has been started. Check out Portal:West Bengal. I could not initiate all the sections, eg News. Please help improve the portal, and spread the word. Plesae think if more sections could be added, as well as links to more related articles. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:56, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks a ton

Wow! Great work with the map. Have you contacted anyone for using the png version in order to render the West Bengal locator map (Image:India West Bengal locator map.svg) correctly? Once that is done, IMO, West Bengal would be ready for FAC. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:09, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
