Antonio Skármeta

Antonio Skármeta is a Chilean writer, born 1940-11-07 in Antofagasta. He wrote the novel El cartero de Neruda (which was originally to be called Ardiente paciencia but Skármeta changed his mind last minute), which was later adapted to film as Il Postino. He studied philosophy and literature both in Chile and in New York. From 1967 to 1973, the year he moved to Berlin, Skarmeta taught literature classes at the University of Chile.

He's of Croat origin[citation needed].

Since 2000 he is ambassador of Chile in Berlin.
