Antifascist Resistance Groups October First
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antifascist Resistance Groups October First (in Spanish: Grupos de Resistencia Antifascista Primero de Octubre, generally known be its abbreviation GRAPO) is the terrorist wing of the PCE(r), a Spanish clandestine maoist group.
It was formed in 1975 with the aims of creating a marxist-leninist state, nearlier to People's Republic of China than the USSR. It is strongly opposed to Spain's NATO membership and is extremely anti-American - specifically US bases on spanish soil.
It has a very low level of popular support, well under the thousands of supporters of the Basque group ETA. Police sources have likened the inner structure of the group to that of a religious cult[citation needed]. Its leader Manuel Perez Martinez was sentenced in a French court for criminal conspiracy with terrorist intent. To date GRAPO has not publicly named his successor.
It is included in the European Union list of terrorist persons and organisations.[1]
