António Veloso

António Augusto Silva Veloso (born São João da Madeira, 31 January 1957) was a Portuguese footballer. A right defender, he spent almost all his career in SL Benfica, were he played from 1980/81 to 1994/95, before finishing it. Only the objection of Benfica manager Artur Jorge avoid him to play more a season. He was Benfica's capitan, from 1988/89 to 1994/95 seasons.
He won the titles of National Champion, for the seasons of 1980/81, 1982/83, 1983/84, 1986/87, 1988/89, 1990/91 and 1994/94, and the Cups of Portugal for 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1993. He played at the UEFA Cup finals, in 1983, lost to Anderlecht (0-1 abroad and 1-1 at home) and at the European Champions Cup final of 1988, lost to PSV Eindhoven (0-0, 5-6 in penalty kicks). He missed the goal that gave the victory to PSV Eindhoven. An injury left him from the team that surprinsingly reached the 1990 final, lost to AC Milan (0-1).
He had 40 caps for the Portuguese national football team, since his first, a 2-1 win over Scotland, at 18 November 1981, in the World Cup qualifyings, to the last game, a 2-2 draw with Spain, at 19 January 1994, in a friendly match. He played at the Euro 1984 finals, were Portugal reached the semi-finals, and was left outside the World Cup 1986 team, due to a doping test, that was latter proved to be fake.
