[edit] History

The Company's name was changed in April 2002 as a result of a strategic repositioning of the Company to concentrate on its core business, protective products and services in a broad healthcare context, and following the disposal of a series of other business units that did not fit within the strategy. The new direction now being taken by the Company leverages the solid foundation provided by the Ansell Healthcare business that has been a major part of the parent company's portfolio of businesses since it was acquired in 1969.

Ansell Limited, as the company is now known, dates back to when its first business, pneumatic bicycle tyre manufacture, commenced in Australia. The Irish company, The Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company, opened a branch office and factory in Melbourne in 1893.[1] Since its commencement the company has changed its name on many occasions to reflect the nature of the businesses in which it was involved at the time. Pacific Dunlop Limited was established in 1986, after Dunlop Olympic Limited underwent a change of name.[2]

In 1997 Pacific Dunlop was amongst Australia's top 50 companies.[3]

In 1999 Pacific Dunlop entered a major restructuring which sold off the manufacturing arms of major Australian brand names Bonds, Slazenger, Dunlop, Holeproof, Berlei and Tontine. At that time it continued to make tyres and rubberware under the Ansell brand name. The managing director commented at the time of the announcement that "condoms are less than 10 percent ofAnsell's business, but . . . account for 90 percent of the publicity." [4]

Ansell Limited is an Australian publicly listed company with its Corporate Head Office located in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. The Company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange as its home exchange and has listings on the London and New Zealand exchanges. In the US, Ansell Limited shares are traded in the form of American Depository Receipts (ADR's) on the NASDAQ.

Ansell Limited retained a major investment in South Pacific Tyres, a manufacturer, marketer and distributor in Australia and New Zealand of tyres for passenger vehicles, light trucks, trucks, and for agricultural and industrial purposes, until 2006, when Ansell sold its share to Goodyear, the other partner in the joint venture.
