The opening scene have two guards complaining about the climate when the temperature suddenly drops. An intruder breaks through the guard's compartment door.

At the mansion, both Jubilee and Professor X are talking when an alarm is alerted "registering violent mutant activity." A mutant comes up on the display and is called Robert "Bobby" Drake also known as Iceman. All the X-Men are called to the Blackbird except Jubilee, who is to prepare the infirmary. Professor X explains the situation, telling them that Iceman was apart of the X-Men until he left.

When they land the ship, Iceman appears, creating a wall of ice defending himself. Beast catches up to him, offering the X-Men's help, but Iceman refuses. Cyclops eventually renders him unconscious when the military come rushing in. Professor X creates illusions and scare off the military and takes Iceman back to the mansion.

Professor X and Iceman are arguing, revealing that Iceman is the rebellious one. Cyclops and Iceman also have issues to resolve. Beast questions why Iceman attacked the compound, but he refuses to tell. Beast drops Lorna Dane into the conversation. It cuts back to a flashback when the X-Men are fighting a supervillain, when Lorna is almost killed and Iceman takes off in anger. Lorna follows. Iceman and Lorna have a normal life for a while when both of their views on mutant powers changes. Lorna deeply believed in helping mutants and their rights, while Iceman did not want to go back to Professor X at all. Iceman came back to apologise, but Lorna was gone with the house trashed. He found a piece of paper with "Kirby Glen" written on it, which is the location of that storage depot. Iceman thinks that the government kidnapped Lorna.

Beast walks out. He forgets to give a book to Iceman and goes back in the room, discovering his escape. We cut to the Kirby Glen compound, and Jubilee and Iceman are seen hidden behind the bushes studying the environment. Both of them break into the compound when another bunch of mutants knock them out. Professor X, Wolverine, Beast and Cyclops come to investigate.

Jubilee and Iceman are tied to a chair and Jubilee reads a box that says "Mutant Project" on it. Both of them escape. However Wolverine takes down Iceman. Just then the same group of mutants who knocked out Iceman and Jubilee come to attack the X-Men, and each of them battle each other. Professor X sends a telepathic message to adjust their tactics and they are finally defeated. Just then, the group that the X-Men were fighting introduce themselves. They are Forge, Havok, Multiple Man, Strong Guy, Quicksilver and Wolfsbane and are also known as X-Factor. The X-Men discover that is in fact a training camp for mutants. Iceman discovers that Lorna faked her own disappearance to start a new life and that she fell in love with Havok.

Even though invited to come back into X-Men, Iceman refuses.
