In a hadith in Sahih Bukhari [2]:

A narration attributed to Ibn Abbas reports:

“ Once Allah's Apostle passed by a dead sheep and said (to the people), "Why don't you use its hide?" They said, "But it is dead," He said, "Only eating it, is prohibited." ”

In a hadith in Sahih Bukhari [3]:

A narration attributed to Jabir ibn Abdullah reports:

“ I heard Allah's Apostle, in the year of the Conquest of Makkah, saying, "Allah and His Apostle made illegal the trade of alcohol, dead animals, pigs and idols." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What about the fat of dead animals, for it was used for greasing the boats and the hides; and people use it for lights?" He said, "No, it is illegal." Allah's Apostle further said, "May Allah curse the Jews, for Allah made the fat (of animals) illegal for them, yet they melted the fat and sold it and ate its price." ”

Dogs are considered najis, and thus touching them results in becoming ritually impure. Muslim texts include [4]:

A narration attributed to Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari reports:

“ Allah's Apostle forbade taking the price of a dog, money earned by prostitution and the earnings of a soothsayer. ”

In contrast to dogs, cats are not considered najis.
