Angra dos Reis is a city located in the southwest of Rio de Janeiro state, in Brazil. It is situated 151km from the city of Rio de Janeiro. It has a beautiful coastline with 365 islands. Brazil's only operational nuclear power station (the Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto) is located here.
Municipal boundaries are with:
- North: Bananal and São José do Barreiro
- Northeast: Rio Claro
- East: Mangaratiba
- West: Parati
- South: Atlantic Ocean
The most important economic activities are commerce, fishing, industry, services and tourism. The port has an oil terminal as well as shipbuilding (Keppel Fels, former Verolme). Brazil's only nuclear power stations, Angra I and Angra II are located nearby. They employ 3,000 people, and generate another 10,000 indirect jobs in Rio de Janeiro State. Tourism is highly developed with countless beaches, islands and pristine waters perfect for swimming or scuba diving.
There is a small cattle herd of 4,200 head. The main agricultural products in planted area are:
- bananas: 1,460 hectares / 3,600 tons
- coconut: 10 hectares / 130,000 fruits
- oranges: 4 hectares / 25 tons
- hearts of palm (palmito): 50 hectares / 75 tons
- sugarcane: 20 hectares / 390 tons

[edit] Meaning of the name
The name of the place has an interesting history. Gaspar de Lemos, a navigator and commander of the Portuguese naval fleet embanked at the Long Island (Ilha Grande) on 6 January 1502, the “Kings’ day”, that is, “Dia de Reis.” Accordingly, the place was named “Angra dos Reis”, which means “Kings’ Bay”.

One of the members of the above naval fleet is believed to have written back to Portugal about the place in these words:
"Sometimes I felt The ecstasy of The flowers and trees' perfume so strong that I thought I had found paradise. And what I will say of The great number of birds, full of colors and their tunes, how many and how beautiful? I won't say more because I Know you will never believe me."
