Angophora costata, known as the Smooth-barked apple or Sydney Red Gum is an iconic gum tree of the Sydney basin. It grows on sandstone soils, generally on headlands or elevated areas. It is not closely related to the River red gum. The Angophora is a gum tree but it is not a Eucalypt as its buds are not well capped.

[edit] Description

Angophora costata grows into a large tree (although it is often stunted or mallee-like) and is recognisable by its distinctive orange trunk, which is a more subdued greyish hue in winter. White flowers occur in summer.

[edit] Cultivation

This is a large plant generally unsuitable for any but the largest gardens.
