Ang Mo Kio Secondary School was established on January 2, 1979, as the first secondary school in Ang Mo Kio New Town in the central region of Singapore. It started out with 12 secondary classes in the premises of Hwi Yoh Secondary School. On September 20 1980, the school was officially opened by Yeo Toon Chia, then Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio Constituency. The school occupied its premises in Ang Mo Kio Street 22 from July 12 1979 to December 31 1999.
AMKSS was headed by founding Principal, Tan Joo Kheng, who was followed by Monica Quek Swee Imm, Tan Guat Kim, Doreen Yip Woon Yong, Paramita Bandara and Tan Siew Piang. On December 15, 2004, Tan Chee Siong , the current Principal, took over the position as head of the school.
AMKSS has always been ranked top 50 based on the annual GCE O Level results by the Ministry of Education and it is one of the best neighbourhood school and sought after secondary school in Singapore.
AMKSS was best ranked 18th in the annual Singapore Straits Times Ranking of schools.
