[edit] Plot

The year is 2015, 15 years after the first disastrous contact with the mysterious beings known as Angels resulted in the global cataclysm known as Second Impact which wiped out half of the human race. To defend humanity against future Angel attacks, the UN established the NERV organization in Tokyo-3 to develop giant bio-mechanical humanoid weapons known as Evangelions. Now, the Angels have finally returned, and the untested Evangelions can only be piloted by specially selected 14 year olds. Shinji Ikari, estranged son of the director of NERV, Commander Gendo Ikari, arrives in Tokyo-3 and is dragooned into piloting Evangelion Unit 01 to fight the Angel Sachiel which is attacking the city. Part 1 of 2.

[edit] Trivia

  • Tokyo-3 was built over the present-day city of Hakone. This is briefly mentioned on-screen in episode 7, but also throughout the series there are stray references to geographical landmarks which surround Tokyo-3, which also surround present-day Hakone.
  • Sachiel's energy blasts form the shape of a crucifix.
  • Ritsuko states that it took Rei seven months to syncronize with Eva Unit 00.
  • The episode's original airdate, October 4, 1995, also happened to be the date of Yom Kippur on that year. Given the extensive use of symbols from Judaism throughout the series, it is plausible that this was deliberate; whether or not this is actually the case, however, is subject to debate.
