[edit] World Maps
There are a couple of problems with your 1822 and 1885 colonization maps. Firstly, Eritrea was not a province of Turkey at this time. What was under Ottoman rule (it should say Ottoman Empire, not Turkey, btw, which did not exist at the time) was the island city of Massawa and its mainland counterpart Arkiko. So for 1822, there should be a small dot right around those two cities that goes to Turkey, but nothing else. For 1885, you have it as controlled by Italy (all of Eritrea), which is also a bit off. At that time, Italy controlled the island of Massawa and Arkiko as well, which it had just acquired from Egypt (who was controlling it on behalf of the Ottomans) via Great Britain in 1885. It wasn't until 1890 that the colony of Eritrea was founded with similar borders to its current size. For instance, see the Battle of Dogali, which was fought just 10 miles outside of Massawa in 1887, which resulted from Italian incursion into Ethiopian territory (i.e. Dogali, just 10 miles outside was outside of its jurisdiction). Also, the port of Assab should appear as a dot in the southeast owned by Italy at this time (starting 1882, although an Italian shipping company bought it from the Afar sultan in 1869).
Also, your maps for periods after 1557 should show the Ottoman empire controlling Massawa/Arkiko and Zeila, in Somaliland (Somalia). — ዮም | (Yom) | Talk • contribs • Ethiopia 19:06, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:Monocacy.svg
Thanks for uploading Image:Monocacy.svg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] maps
Hi. I see you have been quite prolific adding ACW battle maps. What tools or methods are you using to turn them out so quickly? Hal Jespersen 19:34, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- So you've done some of these maps previously? I was getting an inferiority complex when I saw two or three a day going up. :-) It takes me a lot longer, usually. I use Macromedia Freehand because I'm used to it. All of my "source files" are out on my website, http://www.posix.com/CWmaps/ , so that others could theoretically modify them, as they can with the articles. (I may convert over to Adobe Illustrator one of these days.) Hal Jespersen 23:04, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
-
- Amazing. Well, welcome to WP. If I could suggest a few very minor things: (1) You should consider making the map images much larger. The thumbnail capability obviously displays them rather small, but the user can click to get a larger version. (2) You should use more descriptive filenames; the one for Port Republic was unnecessarily abbreviated. (3) I don't think it is good to put the battle name and legends on the map image itself. That information should go into the caption, where it can be translated for other language versions and other date formats. (Please ignore my Battle of Gettysburg maps that violate this principle, but they were early efforts.) Hal Jespersen 00:41, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
