[edit] Appreciation Week

It had been one of Esperanza's goals to recognize those who had made major contributions, particularly considering that several of the individuals who may have made such contributions might have made them in such a way, perhaps by contributions to a variety of separate things, that they are not recognized. I'm afraid I don't know specifically what you meant by "mass awards", but possibly, I would personally have no real objections to having the individual projects give out awards to whomever they see to have earned them, even if that were to be only a comparatively small award. Exactly what sort of and how many awards might be given out would I think clearly be at the discretion of the individual groups, and really not my place to say. But, I guess, one of my primary reasons for proposing this is that a lot of editors have over the years noticed that the efforts of several valuable contributors have gone unnoticed, and that, in some cases, this might have lead to the reduced activity in wikipedia and possibly in some cases leaving of wikipedia by those parties. Again, I really don't know of any specific details I could offer, because I don't think that it would be my place at this point to make any such detailed proposals. Whether the awards would be given out to major accomplishments, length of service, or at all would be really up to the discretion of the individual groups. Also, one thing that might be true in some cases is that some of these groups might not exactly look to act in this way very often, and maybe receiving a prompt like this would perhaps make several of their members ultimately feel more valuable and appreciated, which wouldn't be a bad thing. I hope that this rather incoherent response satisfies you at least a little. But, again, I'm really at this point only proposing the idea, it wouldn't be my place to say exactly how it should be enacted, if at all. Badbilltucker 17:21, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza

I'm not sure whether or not you are familiar with this but Esperanza is being put up for deletion. What is your view on this sutuation? I find this very ironic seeing Esperanza's definition in Spanish literally is "Hope".--¿Why1991 ESP. | Sign Here 04:04, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A new Picture.

Hi AndonicO! I just took a new picture not to long ago. I personally think it is the best I have taken so far due to the clarity, here it is. What do you think, while the bars are unattractive I think the statue looks pretty good :D. Thanks and I saw your recent nomination at the FPC looks pretty good. — Arjun 15:03, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Definition

Noob has the word new in it but in a gramatically incorrect way. It means one is ignorant, stupid, or unexperienced in whatever certain field in is being explanied in. Ex.

(You're playing Warcraft and you make what would be a dumb comment if it were an experienced player. Someone walks up to you then calls you a noob.)

But pretty much most people consider any person that is a newcomer a noob when truly that is to broad to base the term. Well happy editing I've got to get back to those noobs and reply to their comments.

[edit] Need a bit of help...

Hey Andonic,

I was wondering if you could help me out with my work on the Space warfare in fiction page, which I spun off from Space warfare a while ago. It has been prodded for deletion (rightly so, in fact) because it is mostly original research (which it is). I need a bit of help in getting it properly sourced and referenced (as well as cutting down the OR), as I don't have much experience in those fields. Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks! S h a r k f a c e 2 1 7 01:47, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help man. I had been working on that page (little edits) for so long (at least, over such a long period) that I didn't source it. I guess I hoped that due to the size of Wikipedia, it wouldn't be found until it was in good shape. S h a r k f a c e 2 1 7 19:44, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the irony is crueler than that: I tagged my own work with the original research tag when I first spun it off. In hindsight, that was a stupid idea. S h a r k f a c e 2 1 7 19:57, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello from a main page regular

Recent vandal attacks on the main page where an 'interesting' picture has been snuck in via unprotected subparts of the main page have been annoying at the least - Yes it's true. It has been one or two lapses of concentration by admins who forgot to protect something that they placed on the front page templates. Admins are human, they do make mistakes. Everyone has been poked and reminded. I'm not saying that it won't happen again, but everything that should be done has.

However.

What should happen when such a vandal attacks? Within minutes someone with admin ability spots it, quietly reverts it and covers the cracks that the vandal oozed in via. The vandal is blocked, defeated and deflated, they move on.

What does happen when such a vandal attacks? Everyone, their dog, cat, hamster and rabbits swamp this talk page with "OMG!11!! I'M OFFENDED!! ARGH! ARGH! MY EYES WTF!" style messages of outrage and indignation. The vandal says "HAR HAR PWND! I EMS TEH 1337", posts several taunting messages about how good they are and revels in the afterglow of their nuclear attack.

Eventually, within minutes someone with admin ability spots it, reverts it and covers the cracks that the vandal oozed in via. The vandal is blocked and moves on with a self-satified smug smile and sticky underpants.

People. If you get all up in arms about it, you're feeding the vandal's ego. Just let it pass. It will be reverted within minutes. --Monotonehell 10:38, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Somewhere at sometime, it was discussed to not mention WP:AIAV when warning users. This is so that we don't have vandalism to AIAV when vandalizing users click the link and go to the page, and perhaps continue to vandalize. Think WP:BEANS.

[edit] "Vandalism"

Hello,

I see that you have called my edit of the image description of the Esperanza logo "vandalism", and have threatened to block me. I would like to object to this. Although I never took the plunge and joined Esperanza, I visited the Esperanza page often, and I distinctly recall that during the process of creating a logo, different people contributed different letters, which were put together to form the Esperanza logo.

Although I agree that it might be wrong that each letter was contributed by a different person, this was an error of wording and not intentional vandalism. I think you acted too hastily by placing a vandalism warning on my talk page -- and even one that's usually reserved for people repeatedly and blatantly vandalising pages and not used as a first warning -- and I therefore request that you remove this warning from my talk page.

As for the wording in the image description, would you think that writing "letters from different contibutors were put together to form the final logo" would be acceptable? This is still correct, even if one person might have made more than one letter.

I appreciate your response in this matter. 193.217.243.135 15:28, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I agree that my first wording was unclear, but it was not intended as vandalism. I'll try to write more clearly next time. 193.217.243.135 15:39, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

There are a number of areas which I will be working on (including changing my username) in the next few months in order to allay the fears of those who opposed my election to administrator.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your support over the past week. I've been blown away by the level of interest taken in my RFA and appreciate the time and energy dedicated by all the editors who have contributed to it, support, oppose and neutral alike. I hope to bump into you again soon and look forward to serving you and Wikipedia in any way I can. Cheers! You thought I was a sysop already. What more can I say? Thanks a million! The Rambling Man 18:09, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
